Understanding and implementing zkSNARKS

Overview (resum en anglès):
This project provides a comprehensive end-to-end overview of zkSNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge), connecting fundational abstract algebra and applied cryptography engineering.
This work firstly provides the mathematical base knowledge on group theory, finite fields and their extensions, elliptic curves and bilinear pairings; and building on this mathematical machinery, we present the cryptographic building blocks such as R1CS (Rank-One Constraint Systems) and their derived QAP (Quadratic Arithmetic Programs), together with various preliminar protocols.
We follow it with the theoretical presentation and practical implementation of two important zkSNARK protocols: Pinocchio and Groth16. For both schemes we describe first a conceptual version which helps to grasp intuition and understanding, and then the optimized version used in real-world. These theoretical descriptions are validated through a full implementation of a DSL (Domain Specific Language) with a circuit compiler, which compiles down to the R1CS, subsequently computing the QAP. We also implement the necessary mathematic machinery such as finite fields, elliptic curves, bn128 pairing; and on top of that, the full implementation of both the Pinocchio and Groth16 zkSNARK protocols.
By bridging the gap between the theory and practice, this work provides an educational resource to go from basics of abstract algebra to the internal machinery of modern zkSNARKs, covering both the theoretical side and the practical implementation.
