Design and Validation of a Network Time Synchronization Service Based on Precision Time Protocol

Description

Accurate time synchronization is critical for telecommunications and distributed systems to ensure seamless data exchange and operational reliability [1]. The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) offers a cost-effective and highly accurate method for network synchronization [2]. This project focuses on designing and implementing a PTP-based time synchronization service tailored for academic and research environments. The service will be deployed to reduce jitter and temporal errors while providing practical utility for educational and experimental purposes.

The project will include an initial configuration and testing phase, an in-depth technical study to identify the optimal architecture for EETAC deployment and a comprehensive laboratory manual preparation. These steps will ensure that the service is functional, easily replicable, and maintainable by future users.

Methodology and Objectives to achieve

The Precise Time Protocol (PTP) will be implemented at the link and network levels to enable accurate temporal synchronization. By utilizing PTP, devices within the network can achieve microsecond-level clock alignment, ensuring precise timing for time-sensitive applications.

The specific objectives of this research project are:

- Design, configure, and validate a PTP-based time synchronization service for teaching and research networks.
- Perform initial setup, testing, and a technical study to optimize the network architecture and reduce temporal errors.
- Create a laboratory manual to guide the system's setup, testing, and troubleshooting for educational and research use.
- Characterize and discuss results, future work, and limitations.

Workplan

First, at the design phase, the student will have access to microcontroller-based-nodes and knowledge from the directors of the thesis. At the development stage the candidate will have access to a laboratory equipped with instrumentation and components to conduct the hardware design (by understanding the involved fundamental concepts), assembly of the devices and evaluation of their performance. In parallel, the student will advance the writing of the Thesis in an ongoing effort through the estimated duration of the thesis (a semester).
