| Airports operate under a wide range of regulatory frameworks that influence investment decisions, operational performance, pricing policies, and environmental management. This thesis will review and compare different airport economic regulation models worldwide to understand how operational efficiency is incorporated into regulatory mechanisms and incentive schemes.
The study will investigate key questions such as: How is operational efficiency measured and rewarded within airport regulation? Do regulatory systems that guarantee returns through airport charges create incentives for excessive investment rather than efficient management? What mechanisms exist to promote cost efficiency, productivity, and innovation? Can environmental performance incentives contribute to greater operational efficiency? Finally, should regulatory frameworks prioritize societal value creation over airport operator returns, and how might this affect efficiency outcomes? The project combines literature review, regulatory analysis, and case studies, offering students an opportunity to explore the intersection of aviation economics, public policy, sustainability, and airport management. |
