Airline schedules are traditionally designed to maximize network connectivity, aircraft utilization, and economic performance. However, growing operational complexity and the increasing impact of disruptions highlight the need to incorporate operational robustness into the schedule design process.
This thesis will investigate how schedule design can be improved by explicitly considering the probabilistic nature of flight delays and their propagation throughout the network. Particular attention will be given to the tails of delay distributions, as extreme delay events are often the primary drivers of flight cancellations and significant operational disruption.
The project will involve developing airline schedules that account for delay uncertainty, integrating crew planning and optimization, and evaluating different strategies to improve operational robustness. By combining schedule optimization, crew resource allocation, and disruption analysis, the study will assess the trade-offs between efficiency, resource utilization, and resilience.
Based on the resulting schedules, the student will identify flights and network segments that are most vulnerable to disruption and quantify their impact on operational performance. The work offers an opportunity to apply concepts from operations research, optimization, data analytics, and airline operations management to address one of the most relevant challenges facing modern airlines.
