| This thesis will evaluate the environmental performance of an aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organization by quantifying its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and identifying opportunities for decarbonization. Using internal environmental data from 2018 onwards, including energy consumption, waste generation, chemical footprint indicators, environmental performance reports, and corporate decarbonization plans, the study will calculate Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions following the GHG Protocol methodology. A particular focus will be placed on Aircraft-on-Ground (AOG) logistics, where urgent transportation activities generate additional emissions. By combining historical AOG event data with transportation information extracted from SAP and applying ICAO emission factors, the study will estimate the carbon impact of AOG operations and evaluate alternative logistics scenarios. The results will be benchmarked against the 2018 baseline and normalized per man-hour to assess environmental performance trends and support sustainability decision-making within the organization.
Specific Objectives: 1. Quantify the organizational carbon footprint by calculating Scope 1, Scope 2, and relevant Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for the period from 2018 onward, following GHG Protocol standards and company-specific emission factors. 2. Analyze environmental performance trends by comparing annual emissions against the 2018 baseline and normalizing results per man-hour to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented sustainability and decarbonization measures. 3. Assess the carbon impact of Aircraft-on-Ground (AOG) logistics operations by combining historical AOG event data with transportation records and applying ICAO emission methodologies to estimate associated greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Evaluate emission reduction opportunities through scenario-based analyses of alternative transport solutions and improved maintenance planning strategies, including the potential contribution of predictive maintenance to reducing AOG-related emissions and overall organizational carbon footprint. |
