| The use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) during emergency response operations is rapidly increasing. Wildfires, search and rescue missions, and other civil protection activities often involve the simultaneous operation of helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and drones within the same operational area. Ensuring the safe coordination of these heterogeneous aerial assets is becoming an increasingly important challenge.
This project builds upon an existing portable device capable of receiving ADS-B transmissions from cooperative aircraft. The objective is to extend its functionality by enabling communication with a centralized server through Internet connectivity. The device will periodically upload locally received ADS-B information while simultaneously receiving the positions of nearby drones provided by an external UAS management system. By combining both information sources, the system will maintain a unified view of the surrounding air traffic and implement basic conflict detection algorithms to identify potentially hazardous encounters between manned and unmanned aircraft. When a potential conflict is detected, the device will generate traffic advisories that can assist drone operators and incident managers in maintaining safe separation during emergency operations. The project will involve software development for network communications, data exchange, traffic fusion, and conflict detection. Depending on the available time, additional work may include improving the conflict prediction algorithms or enhancing the visualization of traffic and alerts. The student will gain practical experience in embedded software development, network communications, real-time data processing, and the application of surveillance technologies to support the safe integration of drones into emergency response operations. |
