Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
A Wi-Fi handover, or handoff, is the process by which a wireless device (client STA) changes its association from one Access Point (AP) to another while moving within the same network. Efficient handovers are necessary to preserve connectivity and maintain active data flows during mobility.

Despite improvements introduced by mechanisms such as IEEE 802.11k, 802.11v, 802.11r, or 802.11ba, Wi-Fi handovers are still not fully seamless. Even when moving between APs belonging to the same network, such as eduroam, connectivity may be interrupted for several seconds, severely affecting real-time and interactive traffic. Current devices typically perform a hard handover, where the old connection is lost before the new one is established. In contrast, a soft handover maintains the previous connection until the new one becomes available, potentially avoiding packet loss and service interruption. IEEE 802.11bn, the basis of Wi-Fi 8, is expected to enable multi-radio devices to maintain simultaneous connections with different APs. This project aims to reproduce this capability using off-the-shelf devices equipped with two Wi-Fi interfaces.

The project will start with a review of the relevant literature on Wi-Fi mobility, handover mechanisms, and multi-radio operation. The student will then become familiar with Linux-based Wi-Fi management tools and interfaces. Based on this knowledge, a soft-handover mechanism will be designed, implemented using commodity hardware, and experimentally evaluated. The evaluation will focus on handover delay, packet loss, connectivity disruption, and the impact on active data flows, comparing the proposed solution with conventional Wi-Fi handovers.
