Overview (resum en anglès): The increasing demand for food production, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the expansion of renewable energies represent important challenges for the efficient management of agricultural land. In this context, agrivoltaic systems have emerged as an alternative capable of combining agricultural production and photovoltaic energy generation within the same area, improving land-use efficiency while modifying crop microclimatic conditions.
This Bachelor's Thesis evaluates the effect of different agrivoltaic configurations on the morphological, physiological and productive development of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). The experiment was carried out at the UPC Agròpolis experimental facilities (Viladecans, Barcelona), within the European SYMBIOSYST project (Horizon Europe). Three treatments were compared: an open-field system without photovoltaic panels (control), a system with translucent photovoltaic panels and a system with opaque photovoltaic panels.
During the crop cycle, several phenotyping measurements were performed to evaluate plant development. The analysed variables included plant height, number of tillers, relative chlorophyll content (SPAD), total fresh weight and water content. The collected data were statistically analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison test.
The results showed that the different shading conditions generated by the agrivoltaic systems influenced spinach crop responses. Plant height and number of tillers showed limited differences among treatments, whereas productive and physiological variables presented more evident variations. The opaque photovoltaic treatment showed the highest fresh weight values, while the control treatment presented higher water content. The translucent system generally showed an intermediate behaviour compared with the other treatments.
These results suggest that agrivoltaic systems can modify spinach development and that the shading level generated by photovoltaic panels represents a key factor influencing crop response. This study contributes to improving knowledge about the integration of photovoltaic systems into leafy vegetable production and provides useful information for developing more sustainable agricultural models adapted to Mediterranean conditions.
